Turkish police on Tuesday detained five people over a 2015 attack on a bus carrying players and staff of İstanbul’s Fenerbahçe football club, Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced. The detentions took place after investigators reopened a case that had previously ended without charges. Gürlek said a new analysis of mobile phone traffic and cell tower records indicated that the five had communicated before the attack. As part of the investigation led by prosecutors in Turkey’s northwestern Trabzon province, police searched their homes and seized material. On April 4, 2015, two shots fired from a shotgun struck the bus as the team traveled to Trabzon airport after a 5-1 away victory over Çaykur Rizespor in Turkey’s top division. Ufuk Kıran, the driver, sustained facial injuries yet successfully brought the bus to a halt with assistance from nearby passengers, preventing a crash. None of the players or club staff was injured. Three days after the incident, police took two men into custody, only for them to be released under judicial supervision for lack of proof. Prosecutors closed the inquiry without charges. The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) suspended matches for seven days in response to the attack. The investigation was reopened in May following Gürlek’s announcement that a legal assessment allowed for the previous decision to drop the case to be re-examined. This evaluation was carried out by a specialized cold case department created under the Ministry of Justice. Fenerbahçe expressed approval of Tuesday’s detentions and demanded that those responsible for planning or executing the assault be identified and prosecuted.
