Arsenal open Gabriel Martinelli transfer talks with one major hurdle stopping record sale
Arsenal have opened talks with Galatasaray over selling Gabriel Martinelli for a potential club record transfer sale as Mikel Arteta continues to re-shape his squad
Arsenal are in talks with Galatasaray over a potential deal involving Gabriel Martinelli.
Martinelli, 25, is into the final 12 months of his contract at the Emirates Stadium and lost his place in the XI to Leandro Trossard last season. Although Trossard has since left to sign for Besiktas, Christos Tzolis has arrived in a £34million move from Club Brugge and the Gunners remain in the market for a new left winger.
It has left Martinelli's future in the balance with speculation increasing that he could be sold before the end of the transfer window. Now, football.london understands that Arsenal are negotiating with Galatasaray over a fee for the Brazil international, having received an enquiry from the Turkish Super Lig club on the weekend.
However, no deal will be sanctioned until there is movement in the other direction and Arsenal sort a left wing replacement themselves, after losing out on Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior.
Tzolis has been Arsenal's starter on the left wing in pre-season, scoring against Girona on his debut before assisting from a corner against Real Betis. He then set-up the Gunners' second goal during their 3-2 defeat against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday and is looking a real threat on that side.

Martinelli, meanwhile, didn't feature in Arsenal's first official pre-season fixture at Girona but has since come off the bench as a second-half substitute against Betis and Dortmund. He appeared for the final 12 minutes in the defeat to the German side and scored in the resulting Emirates Cup penalty shootout.
Speaking post-Dortmund, Arteta revealed the Gunners remain active in the transfer market as they look to strengthen their squad. "Well, that's what we're trying to do (sign more players)," the Spaniard said. It has to be the right player in the market to make us much better. We are very much looking forward to that."
Arsenal signed Martinelli for just £6m in 2019 and he has gone on to make 278 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 62 goals. But he struggled to make an impact last season and lost his regular starting spot to Trossard.
Belgium international Trossard produced some big moments for Mikel Arteta's side en route to the Premier League title, before being sold for £15.3m to Besiktas. Martinelli could follow his teammate with a move to their top flight rivals Galatasaray, but for a much greater transfer fee.
While no specific transfer fee has been mooted for Martinelli, his age and profile would command a higher fee than what Besiktas paid for Trossard.
Galatasaray are reportedly also in talks with AC Milan over a move for winger Rafael Leao, with a £43m fee being discussed. If Arsenal were to get a similar fee for Martinelli, that would eclipse the current record-sale, which saw Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain move to Liverpool for £35m in 2019.
