Steve Marsella dead aged 59 as Terry Butcher pens emotional tribute to ex Hibs and Inverness coach Marsella worked in Scotland under Butcher at both Inverness and Hibs and later served as Kilmarnock's chief scout Former Inverness and Hibs goalkeeping coach Steve Marsella has passed away. The 59-year-old died on Saturday after battling a short illness. Marsella was best known in Scotland for his roles working under Terry Butcher. He was with the former England and Rangers captain at Brentford, Inverness, Hibs and Newport County. An emotional Butcher said: “Steve Marsella passed away on Saturday in Huddersfield, surrounded by his family. “It’s so sad. “He was a loving, caring and very generous man, who will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.” Marsella was responsible for bringing up a lot of the Caley Thistle squad that went on to lift the Scottish Cup in 2015. He signed Danny Devine, Carl Tremarco, Johnny Hayes, Gary Warren, Greg Tansey, Ross Draper, Marley Watkins, Aaron Doran, Danny Williams, Billy McKay and James Vincent. Butcher, Maurice Malpas and Marsella then had a short and ill-fated spell at Hibs. Marsella went on to be chief scout at Kilmarnock under Lee McCulloch and brought up the likes of Alan Power. Prior to coming up to Scotland, he had been goalkeeping coach at local team, Huddersfield Town, Barnsley, Notts County and Crewe. He also had a spell in Iceland and also worked for the Scottish Football Association up in Moray. He went on to work as a goalkeeping coach for the Philippines, where he worked under the late Sven-Göran Eriksson and also for the local side Global. He stepped into management in his own right with Indian club Ladakh in 2023, but a lack of funding stopped that move from being a success. Marsella had a playing career in the English lower leagues, although he also played in Scotland for Elgin City as they moved up from the Highland League to the senior ranks.
