Raith Rovers' Charlie Telfer recounts Premier Sports Cup penalty agony as competition resumes As one of only three clubs – Livingston and East Fife being the other two – not to qualify for the Premier Sports Cup second round despite not losing one of their four group games in 90 minutes, Raith Rovers’ campaign in this season’s tournament could certainly be placed under the ‘hard luck’ bracket. With the competition resuming this weekend in the last 16 knockout stage, Dougie Imrie’s side will not be involved as they continue to lick their wounds following an exit which saw them finish third in Group H behind winners Kilmarnock (who qualified) and second-placed Hamilton Accies. Raith’s campaign included two home wins – 3-1 against Elgin City and 1-0 versus Peterhead – and away draws at Kilmarnock (0-0) and Hamilton (1-1). But Imrie’s men only ended up with eight points overall after losing their penalty shoot-outs against Kilmarnock and Accies 4-2 and 5-4 respectively. One Raith man particularly upset was midfielder Charlie Telfer, whose penalty v Killie at Beechwood Park was saved by keeper Max Stryjek. The Pole also kept out Kyle Turner as the Ayrshire side dug out an extra point on their way to booking a home derby against Ayr United this Friday. Recounting his spot kick pain, Telfer, 31, told the Fife Free Press: “I thought I'd done well within the game, so I felt confident stepping up. "But the keeper's just made a good save. I hadn't missed a penalty in a shootout before, so that was disappointing. "But I'm over it now and as disappointed as I was on the evening, it's just kind of onwards and upwards for me now. "I’ve been involved in maybe four or five penalty shootouts and I’d managed to score in them. This one wasn't quite meant to be, but it makes it a bit easier when you see the likes of (Lionel) Messi missing penalties at the World Cup. If people like that are missing them then it doesn't make me feel as bad. "I'll definitely still volunteer to take a penalty the next time we get one. "Going out of the league cup despite not losing a game in 90 minutes was definitely hard to take. "After the Killie game when we lost the penalty shootout, we were really happy with how we had gone about our game in the 90 minutes but then we were really disappointed with the performance levels over the next two games.”
