Brendan Rodgers was determined to bring Lennon Miller to Celtic during his time in charge, with Mark Guidi claiming the midfielder was identified as one of the manager’s priority additions. Miller established himself as one of Scottish football’s brightest prospects after making his Motherwell breakthrough at just 16, before developing into a key player at Fir Park. His performances eventually earned him a move to Udinese last summer, continuing the familiar route of young Scottish talent heading to Serie A in search of regular first-team football. The midfielder required a period of adjustment following his arrival in Italy but became increasingly involved during the second half of the campaign and is now pushing to begin the new Serie A season as a regular starter. Celtic had previously been linked with Miller while he was still at Motherwell, although there were questions at the time over whether he was ready to immediately command a place in the Hoops midfield. Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, Guidi has now revealed the strength of Rodgers’ interest and suggested Celtic missed an opportunity to secure the youngster before his value increased significantly. Guidi said: “I think Lennon Miller is a quality player. “I would imagine he would want to stay in Italy and have a crack at it. “He’s certainly finding his feet. He was more involved in the second half of the season. “There was a disappointment for him, obviously, missing out on the World Cup, but he’s a quality player. “But this is where Celtic need to learn lessons, and this is where they absolutely deserve criticism in terms of how they go about their recruitment and signing policy. “Brendan Rodgers identified Lennon Miller as a signing he wanted. They would’ve got him for approximately £4.5 million. “But they didn’t push it enough. Brendan Rodgers wanted him, identified him as one of these major targets, but the deal didn’t get over the line. “Now, if you’re talking about Lennon Miller being a target… if there was a chance of Celtic getting Lennon Miller, I think they would take him all day long. “But Udinese have signed him. Udinese would say, ‘At least £10m. We’re not letting him go for what we’ve paid for him’. “So if you’re going to go and get Lennon Miller, I would imagine you’re going to have to pay at least £10 million. At least. “But you could’ve had him 18 months ago for four and a half.” HAVE YOUR SAY – Join the Celtic conversation in our comments section below… Quick Tip – Add Celticshorts.com as your ‘Preferred Source’ on Google News for quick access to the Celtic content you value the most.
