Rangers suffer 'significant' injury nightmare as star sidelined long-term after bumper transfer bid rejected Portuguese striker facing lengthy lay-off after suffering an ACL injury Rangers striker Youssef Chermiti is facing a "significant period of time" on the sidelines according to the club, after sustaining an ACL injury in Sunday’s 2-1 Premiership defeat to Hibs at Ibrox. The 22-year-old Portuguese hitman landed awkwardly at the Broomloan Road end as he attempted to charge down a loose ball after visiting goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger had parried away a shot from Tuur Rommens in the first half. Following a period of treatment, he had to be stretchered off the pitch and later left the stadium in a knee brace and wearing a protective boot. The injury occurred just hours after Rangers had turned down a lucrative £22m transfer bid from Turkish champions Galatasaray. It left manager Derek McInnes praying for a positive outcome and confirming he would be sent for a scan on Monday to determine the full extent of the damage. “It would be wrong of me to speculate - but hopefully, we’ll get some luck on the scan tomorrow and he can be back in a Rangers shirt before too long,” McInnes said in his post-match interview. Subsequent scan results have since confirmed supporters worst fears, with the club’s most valuable centre-forward now facing an extended period on the treatment table. A potential transfer exit is also now highly unlikely. A Rangers statement read: “Following assessment, striker Youssef Chermiti suffered an ACL injury in Sunday’s match with Hibernian. Youssef will be out of action for a significant period of time. Everyone at Rangers is with him as he begins his recovery.” Why Rangers rejected £22m Chermiti transfer bid Rangers’ hierarchy have intimated they have no interest in conducting business at Galatasaray’s price point as work remains ongoing to strengthen the squad. Chairman Andrew Cavenagh was asked about the offer and why Chermiti was named in McInnes’ starting line-up at a meeting with shareholders in Glasgow on Monday morning. The American delivered an emphatic response, stating: “We won’t ever speak about individual deals and individual players but we will give you the concepts and it will probably get you to where you want to. When we think about selling a player, there are two things that have to come together. “One is that we get the value that is appropriate for the player and the second is that there is time left with the window that we can reinvest those funds quickly and efficiently to be equal or better from a sporting perspective. “If both of those things don’t exist, we won’t do a deal. we are not under pressure to sell. That is the mentality when you think about these deals. Selling a player for a bunch of money if you can’t put it back into the squad and replace him or make the squad better is useless. What we care about is winning, not the financial side of it. “The sporting side has to come first for us. And to the comment about why would you play a player who had a transfer offer? Going from an offer to where a player goes out the door, there is a huge number of things that have to happen before you would pull a player out of a line-up again impacting sporting. “Just because someone lobs an unsolicited offer in on one sheet of paper, you don’t yank a player from a really important match.
