Celtic still face the possibility of another approach for Alistair Johnston, despite talks over the right-back hitting a stumbling block. Everton have been tracking Johnston as they look to strengthen at right-back, although reports last week suggested their interest had cooled after Celtic and Everton failed to agree on his valuation. Johnston, meanwhile, has simply got on with his job. The Canadian has started both of Celtic’s Premiership matches and played the opening 45 minutes at Rugby Park as Shaun Maloney’s side raced into a 3-0 lead against Kilmarnock. He was withdrawn at half-time as a precaution after informing Maloney that he “felt something”. There has been no indication of anything serious. Everton’s interest may not be finished either. Mark Douglas, Northern Football Correspondent, has reported that David Moyes’ side aren’t completley out of the running for Johnston. He said (Press Reader): “Celtic’s Alistair Johnston emerged as a priority last week but the move hit a stumbling block over a difference in valuation of around £5m. “It is not totally dead but the club have had to keep other plates spinning in their bid to solve a long-standing problem.” That £5m gap is significant, and Celtic have little reason to shift their position. Johnston has three years remaining on his contract, is 27 and has returned from a strong World Cup campaign. Celtic are also preparing for a crucial Champions League play-off against LASK next week. This is hardly the moment to start entertaining cut-price offers for a first-choice defender. Johnston has remained professional throughout the speculation, though there was an Everton scout at Rugby Park as Celtic put five past Killie. The scout did not get a full afternoon’s viewing of the Canadian, given his precautionary half-time withdrawal, but Everton’s presence was another indication that the interest has been genuine. Douglas’ latest update is important because it leaves the door open. Everton have other targets and cannot wait indefinitely while Celtic hold their position. Equally, there is still time for them to return to the negotiating table if they decide Johnston is the player Moyes wants. For Celtic, the position should be straightforward. Johnston is under a long-term contract, remains an important part of Martin O’Neill’s side, and Celtic have major European business immediately in front of them. If Everton want to change that, they will have to get much closer to Celtic’s valuation.
