Andrew Cavenagh has admitted the Ibrox club attempted to prevent Celtic receiving the full Broomloan Road Stand for last season’s Scottish Cup showdown. Celtic were eventually handed around 8,000 tickets after arguing that Scottish Cup regulations entitled them to claim up to 20 per cent of the stadium capacity, rather than the 2,500 allocation used for league derbies. Asked at Rangers’ annual shareholder meeting whether the Scottish FA had forced the issue, Cavenagh said: “We explained our position about the risk but ultimately it was overridden and resulted in Celtic were given the full Broomloan. “To be clear, the 2500 allocation is what we believe is workable going forward.” An independent review subsequently backed Celtic’s interpretation of the regulations, describing the Scottish Cup entitlement as a “competition rule, not a negotiation.” Rangers ultimately accepted their obligation and confirmed around 8,000 tickets for Celtic supporters after seeking clarification from the SFA. Cavenagh has now made clear that Rangers favour limiting future Celtic allocations at Ibrox to 2,500, although the independent review also outlined a potential pathway towards eventually accommodating between 7,000 and 8,000 Hoops supporters in the Broomloan Stand. The issue could therefore return should Celtic and Rangers be paired together at Ibrox in another Scottish Cup tie.
