Kavuma-McQueen will play with a splint for Portsmouth over the next few weeks. Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho confirmed that on-loan Chelsea winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen opted against surgery after fractures in his right hand. Kavuma-McQueen joined Championship side Portsmouth on a season-long loan in mid-August after spending the pre-season with Chelsea’s first team on tour of Australia and Asia. The 17-year-old has so far made five appearances for Pompey and already scored his first goal for the club in the 3-1 win over Lincoln in late August. His latest appearance against Cardiff City on Saturday came as a surprise. The winger suffered a hand injury in Tuesday’s defeat to Derby County, but still played for 22 minutes just a few days later. According to Portsmouth boss Mousinho, the Chelsea loanee decided not to undergo surgery that would have kept him out for about two months and instead chose to wear a splint. “He’s got two fractures in his right hand and, to be fair play to him, as there was an option for surgery or to keep playing, it’s about pain management for now,” Mousinho said about Kavuma-McQueen’s injury. “He went over the advertising hoardings on Tuesday night, and he’s got a splint on his hand. It’s covered up, so hopefully he’ll be absolutely fine. “He’ll probably have to wear that for about four weeks before it’s fully healed, and then probably another four weeks after that to make sure there’s no more damage.” Portsmouth will play two more games, against Charlton and Blackburn Rovers, until September’s international break, which would hopefully give the young winger the much-needed rest and time to recover. Strong start to Kavuma-McQueen's Pompey loan The Portsmouth move is Kavuma-McQueen’s first senior loan, having starred for Chelsea’s Under-16s and Under-18s in the last few seasons. He made his senior Chelsea debut in April this year, as a second-half substitute in the 7-0 FA Cup quarter-final win against Port Vale. Weeks later in May, he made Chelsea’s bench in the 2-1 Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur, but unfortunately did not get the chance to make his debut in the competition. As mentioned, he also made Xabi Alonso’s pre-season squad this summer. Kavuma-McQueen only made one appearance, however, in the 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers. This was mostly because Chelsea had plenty of winger options in the squad. Kavuma-McQueen is versatile enough to play on both flanks, but Alonso had Estevao, Geovany Quenda, Jamie Gittens, Dastan Satpayev, Omari Kellyman, and later even Mykhailo Mudryk in these positions. The Pompey loan appears to be a good move for his career. He has been given plenty of minutes and might have been close to establishing himself as a regular starter if not for the injury.
