Chris Wilder on how Sheffield United will try to replace Gustavo Hamer
Sheffield United made it through to the second round of the League Cup with a disciplined and professional performance away to the team who knocked them out of last season's FA Cup, but all the talk afterwards was about a player who was not there.
A 3-0 win at Mansfield Town was overshadowed by the news Gustavo Hamer is on the verge of a move back to former club Coventry City for a fee expected to be £8m, plus add-ons.
Manager Chris Wilder would not answer when asked how much if any he would be able to reinvest, although there is a new bid in for Leicester City defender Harry Souttar.
Wilder said that to get a replacement of Hamer's technical ability, he will probably have to turn to the loan market and perhaps a different profile.
Asked if he expected the transfer to be completed in the coming days, Wilder said: “Yes, I do, 100 per cent so we have to move on. Everybody, me, supporters, players.
“We don't want players to run their contracts down (Hamer's is in its last 12 months).
“We have to find a replacement that can fill that position.
“Cal (Callum O'Hare) played there today. Ryan (One)'s played out there today. But I see Cal more central. To replace a player of Gus' ability it's going to take a fee that I don't think that we will be paying out.
“The loan market offers the opportunity of going and getting a really good one.
“We might have a look at more of an out-and-out, double-whipped winger that hopefully gets the best out of the left-backs as well.
“We've got that on the right with Chongy (Tahith Chong) and Romelle (Donovan).
“We're looking for somebody that gets the punters off the seats and excites us and excites me,” he added.
