Martin Drury's 'admiration' for what Huddersfield Town did in Carabao Cup exit Town exited the competition with a 4-3 defeat on penalties to Preston North End Huddersfield Town head coach Martin Drury said he had “admiration” for his penalty takers despite exiting the Carabao Cup with a shootout loss. Town exited the competition with a 4-3 defeat on penalties following a 1-1 draw against Preston North End at Goodison Park on Saturday. Ryan Ledson and Marcus Harness saw their spotkicks saved, and although Bali Mumba, Jay Sway and Joe Taylor went on to find the target, the Championship outfit did enough to progress. Reflecting on the shootout, Drury told HTTV: “We worked on it yesterday, we’ve worked on it two or three times across pre-season, prior to this game. “Players wanting to take penalties is the first and foremost one, feeling confident to do that, then getting the order of penalty takers right, which we discussed at length, and we got that right, but unfortunately Preston didn’t make too many errors from their penalties, and we made some early errors, and anything can happen in a penalty shootout. “I have admiration for players that step up to the plate and want to go and take them, and that’s what they did today, and unfortunately we’ve come off the other side of it.” Ledson was coming up against his former club, who he made 215 appearances for over a seven-year spell, while the midfielder also began his career at Everton. “Ryan’s a winner, and his mentality’s to win everything, so the fact that we’ve not won the game, we’ve drawn the game, and then obviously disappointing in the penalty shootout for him, but he’s got the courage to do it,” Drury added. “He’s come back to a club that he was at as a young boy, playing against a club that he’s been at for many, many years, so today’s a really emotional day for him. I thought the way that he conducted himself within that, knowing that he’s a winner, knowing that he wants to go and make contact with people and compete, I thought he did it in a really measured way, and a captain’s way of doing things. “Ryan was good today, there’s things for us to learn and get better for sure, but credit to him for how he’s gone about the day.”
