Watford announce signing of Limerick native ahead of WSL season Watford have signed Kilbehenny native ahead of the WSL 2 season Watford FC Women have announced the signing of Republic of Ireland midfielder Aoibheann Clancy, subject to international clearance. The 22-year-old joins the Barclays WSL 2 outfit for an undisclosed fee after most recently playing for Shelbourne in the League of Ireland Women’s Premier Division. The move will bring the young star player into the full-time professional game. She recently completed a degree in Health and Performance Science at U.C.D. Her early sporting career started out with Galtee Gaels Ladies Football Club, in secondary school she played soccer in the Tipperary District League before moving onto Wexford F.C and later Shelbourne. At Watford, she will link up with fellow Irish international Saoirse Noonan from Cork. Known for her ability in both boxes, Clancy helped the Shels to a third-place finish in the league during the 2025 season. She also played in the final as the club beat Galway United 2-0 to lift the All-Island Cup last month. Clancy was the only League of Ireland player in the national squad named in June for World Cup qualifiers against the Netherlands and France. Her only cap for her country came against Morocco in 2022, when she came on as a sub in a 4-0 friendly win. Before moving to Shelbourne in 2025, Clancy was on the books of Wexford where she played a major part in winning the FAI Women’s Cup in 2021. Her performances that year also saw her named as the league’s Young Player of the Year, while earning a spot in the Team of the Season. Clancy becomes Watford’s 10th signing ahead of the WSL 2 opener at home to Burnley on Friday, September 4.
