‘Expectations will be high’: Former Portsmouth favourite sends clear Abu Kamara warning after big-money capture Pompey sealed Abu Kamara’s emotional Fratton Park homecoming in a £2.5m switch from Hull City on Monday. Guy Whittingham has warned Abu Kamara has to be ready to meet the high expectations set by the Fratton faithful following his multi-million pound arrival. But the former Pompey favourite is backing the 23-year-old to reignite his career on the south coast - a place he enjoyed his most successful season to date. It marks an emotional homecoming for Kamara, two years after the conclusion of his outstanding loan stay at PO4, where he spearheaded Pompey to the 2023-24 League One title. The England youth international netted 10 goals and collected 11 assists in 52 outings, helping the Blues complete their Championship return after a 12-year hiatus. But Kamara went on to endure a tough two-year stay at Hull City after making a £4.5m switch from Norwich City in August 2024. The talented attacker scored just five goals in 36 second-tier appearances for the Tigers in his maiden campaign at the MKM Stadium before being shipped off on loan to Getafe last summer, where he failed to collect a goal or an assist in Spain’s top flight. The winger has since turned to Mousinho and Fratton Park to rejuvenate his stuttering career, penning a three-year deal on the south coast. But after arriving for a big fee, Whittingham is adamant Kamara has to be ready to live up to the expectations at PO4 and show supporters he is ready to tackle the Championship once again. Former Pompey favourite sends clear Abu Kamara warning Speaking on the Who Needs Mourinho podcast, he said: ‘Everybody will just remember the League One season won’t they and his contribution to that. ‘It didn’t go so well for him at Hull, he was injured, didn’t get into the side and then went off on loan. ‘I don’t know the guy but hopefully he’s got that determination in him to show he can play at this level again. ‘We all look back at that League One campaign and we all wanted him to stay but that was never going to happen because of the amount of money he was going to go for - and Norwich were always going to go for the highest bidder obviously. ‘You look at that and think from those days he looked like he had that ability. ‘Now, it’s the attitude for him to think ‘I’m going to come in and show people that I am a decent player and deserve to be here and play in the Championship’. ‘He’s going back to a fanbase that likes him - so that’s a huge advantage straight away. ‘The expectations will be high and he will probably appreciate the expectations will be high because of the form he had when he was here. ‘But again, it goes back to the character. There’s a challenge there so let’s hope he’s up for it.’
