Ex-Premier League star on what particularly impressed him about Middlesbrough's Will Lankshear Will Lankshear made a goalscoring start for Middlesbrough against Wrexham Steven Fletcher was left really impressed by Middlesbrough striker Will Lankshear, with his movement in and around the penalty area. Lankshear got his Boro career off to a great start, netting the winning goal in quite some fashion as Kim Hellberg’s side beat Wrexham to seal their passage to the Carabao Cup second round. But there was more to the former Tottenham striker’s performance than just his goal, as he helped transform the look of Boro’s attack with his all-round play. Fletcher, who enjoyed a top career as a striker, which included scoring 45 Premier League goals and playing 33 times for Scotland, had big words of encouragement for the Boro star. “I’m really impressed with his movement,” Fletcher told ITV. “He’s patient in his movement and knows when to go into the right area. I was impressed with the movement all night. “For someone at such a young age. The goal, it’s the second movement I like. You see as the ball comes in he’s moving towards goal, but he has the instinct to realise it’s over his head. “So he stops and drops a bit to be in the position to receive the header back into his path. To create even an extra yard for yourself, then the finish is fantastic. “Not many make that second movement. At such a young age, to have that understanding… Most would just stand still. But all night, the movement was top. And with finishes like that, he’ll do very well.” Lankshear also spoke to the ITV team pitchside after the game, In what Tommy Smith described as an excellent and mature interview, Lankshear admitted he was actually a little disappointed not to score three or four on the night. Fletcher liked that, noting after: “He speaks really well for someone at such a young age. He said there, he felt he should have had three or four goals. You want to hear a striker think like that. “He’s getting into the right positions though and getting the chances. If he wasn’t, that’s when you worry for a striker. But he’s getting into the positions, and again his goal was fantastic.” ------------- Get Teesside Live Premium now for just £1 HERE – exclusive Boro news and features, transfer notebooks, comment and analysis from Eric Paylor, plus an ad-lite experience Join our WhatsApp community to get all the breaking news and best analysis sent straight to your phone by clicking here to subscribe.
