The 24-year-old does not appear to have a future at Elland Road having failed to feature in any of their pre-season friendlies. He spent last season on loan at Hull City, helping the Tigers reach the Premier League with an impressive 15-goal haul. Hull are waiting until the completion of priority deals before they decide whether or not to swoop for Gelhardt for a third time. The Red Dragons supposedly want to sign Gelhardt, who can play up front, out wide or as an attacking midfielder, in a £4.5m deal. Wrexham are said to have recognised Gelhardt could play a role similar to the one he played in Hull’s promotion-winning campaign if he joined their ranks. Birmingham City have also been linked with ‘Joffy’, seemingly strengthening the possibility of Hull’s plan to wait costing them a chance to secure his signature. Hull City’s Joe Gelhardt stance In an interview at the end of July, Tigers chairman Acun Ilicali clearly outlined Hull’s stance on their former loan star. He told BBC Radio Humberside: “I cannot say yes or no at the moment. After we finish our major transfers [we will decide]. I love Gelhardt. For me, he is a fantastic, fantastic boy. We have lived so many successes together. But this is our coach’s decision. “[The] Gelhardt part, after our coach sees the squad, what we will bring to him, we will decide about Gelhardt. We will wait for the coach’s decision. “I think we have good connections with Leeds. They just let us get him twice. If we want to get him again, we will have an advantage. “The problem is, if he will not be able to play, playing time, if we bring him, then he will be unhappy. After our squad will be on the table, the coach I think will decide if he will be able to give time to him or not. He will decide. Don’t expect something from Gelhardt, a decision, before two weeks at least.” Gelhardt has one year remaining on his contract at Elland Road, therefore Leeds may well be open to a sale this summer. A product of Wigan Athletic’s academy, Gelhardt has made 57 senior appearances for the Whites over a six-year period.
