Sheffield Wednesday’s left-back shortage and use of young loanees Wednesday managed to retain Max Lowe following their relegation from the Championship but are not blessed with depth in the left-back department. Scanlon, a former England youth international, would arguably be a shrewd addition to Henrik Pedersen’s squad. However, Liverpool may have reservations over his prospects in South Yorkshire given Lowe’s status in the Owls ranks. On the other hand, Wednesday have been effective developers of young Premier League talent in recent years. Among those have benefited from spells at Hillsborough are Manchester United’s Harry Amass, Fulham’s Shea Charles and Manchester City’s Jaden Heskey. Wednesday are due to begin their League One campaign away at Leyton Orient on Saturday (August 15). They returned to competitive action last weekend, defeating Bolton Wanderers 1-0 in the Carabao Cup.
