It would be safe to say that Newcastle United were the favourites coming into this weekend. A draw against Liverpool and a wing against Tottenham Hotspur in their own backyard had raised expectations around this team. That being said, there are no easy days in the Premier League. The fixture against Bournemouth was fresh proof of that. The Magpies could only earn themselves a 2-2 draw. And they most definitely had to earn it, as they were down 2-0 inside 35 minutes. Many believed starting Matias Fernandez-Pardo ahead of him might be a good idea. Jacob Ramsey feels like somewhat of a forgotten man as well. But at the end of the day, it was those two who ended up making the difference and earning the Magpies a point. Yes, there is a lot of fresh exciting talent at St James’ Park right now. But it would be a mistake to forget those who the club have had for some time. Some summer signings have had a slow start There were always doubts about the immediate quality that some of Newcastle United’s summer signings would add to this team. And so far, they seem justified. Just take this game into consideration. Players like Bazoumana Toure and Aladji Bamba were brought in for significant transfer fees this summer. But once again, they were unused substitutes. And unfortunately, this has not been a rare sight so far this season. Of course, it is far too early to panic about things. But the early signs are not positive at all. Newcastle United have heart One positive that we need to take out of this game is the heart that Newcastle United showcased on the day. Going 2-0 down early in the game, including an own goal, it would have been easy to drop the shoulders and decide that it was not their day. But the Magpies found a way to come back into the game and salvage a draw. That deserves a ton of praise and is a positive sign for things to come in the future. Of course, many might feel that the fans had gotten far too excited far too early about this team. There are a lot of areas where they still need to improve. But at least they have proven that they can get a result even when the going gets tough.
