Bolton Wanderers boss Steven Schumacher has expressed his disappointment in his midfielder Xavier Simons for “lashing out” at Harry Gray during his side’s 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.
Simons, 23, was shown a red card 10 minutes after half-time in Saturday's League Cup contest for swinging his arm into the midriff of Leeds United loanee Gray, 17, after being aggrieved at his shirt being pulled.
Gray managed to play on and lasted 78 minutes on his competitive debut for Wednesday, where he will spend the season on loan. After full-time, Bolton manager Schumacher could not defend his player.
"From the angle I've seen it from this side, it looks like Xav has reacted and lashed out, which he knows you can't do,” he confessed, as per The Star. “It's a poor decision, and it's a decision that you wouldn't expect from him.
“It's the first time I've seen him do that since he's been here, and I'm sure he'll be disappointed with it.” Simons now faces a three-match ban for violent conduct.
Gray is set to experience his first full season in senior football during his spell at Hillsborough. The striker played 20 games during his maiden career loan at Rotherham United during the second half of last season.
The teenager, who made his Leeds first-team debut in April 2025, scored three times in a struggling Millers side that were eventually relegated from League One. Gray started each of his 20 appearances despite a change of manager in March.
