Cleveland Browns News and Rumors 9/5/26: Lights Out This story from TheOBR.com was published as part of a partnership. CLEVELAND, Ohio (TheOBR.com) - Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans! THE DAILY BLOVIATION So, that was interesting. About 6PM on Thursday night, my phone exploded with noise as we started receiving reports of imminent bad weather - winds up to 80 freaking miles per hour, tornado warnings, and the like. Even before the winds hit, our power went out (as it does frequently here), and I instantly knew it would be a long time before it came back on. When a major storm like this comes through, power tends to go out in my neighborhood, and it stays out as other, more densely populated areas get attended to first. Well over a day without electricity. The house went quiet in a way I did not ask for. No screens. No Massive Morning Missive. The refrigerator decided it was done being a refrigerator. I discovered how many of my “habits” are just plugs in a wall, and how little of my personality survives when the Wi-Fi light goes amber and then dies. I have a solution to this, however: Get one of those on-demand generators that come on automatically when the power goes out. I could deduct part of it as a business expense, possibly, because I need constant power for my business to keep running. The one trick is that this is a $10,000 problem, and when I open my wallet, it’s basically empty except for the small flies and dust that emerge. My wallet, apparently, is part of a 1930s cartoon short about someone looking for enough money to buy a hamburger. I need a new wallet. The life of a media member in 2026 writ large. So, for now, I’m confined to a power-outage existence as a coffee shop nomad, paying a couple of bucks for a coffee to keep working on the OBR when the house is dark. The good news is that the bagels at Panera are usually pretty good and their wi-fi is reasonably solid. So, I survive, but consider this a long-winded apology for the lack of a Massive Morning Missive yesterday. I posted in the Watercooler and called it First Energy Memorial Bloviation Day Off. That was not a bit. We sat in the dark. Jacksonville did not move. My project deadline did not budge. Neither did the argument about whether the defensive line is healthy enough to ruin somebody else’s afternoon. THE FRONT, STILL THE POINT: Jacksonville is eight days away. The Akron Beacon Journal has the building hoping the defensive line is healthy enough to matter when it counts. Hall talked Wednesday. Graham and Collins are the tackles. Verse and McGuire are the edges. Sam Williams is new. Somebody has to get home. Without that, Monken’s shiny new offense sits in the driveway. Chris Easterling already used the engine line on the other side of the ball. Both fronts. Same week. FOOT LADDERS AT SIX: Scott Petrak has Spencer Fano’s dad story. He made the kids do agility ladders before friends, before video games, before anything. Thirty minutes. Strict. Resentment included. Now Fano is 6-foot-6, 315, and starting left tackle in Week 1 against Hines-Allen and Walker. Verse said the kid has heart. Fano builds Legos with his new wife when he is not at the facility. I am not above liking that. THE SWEATER: Catherine Hickman wore a “Los Angeles Made Me Do It” sweatshirt on camera. CBS and Cleveland.com ran with it. I assume it was not a coded message about trading the Defensive Player of the Year. I also assume nobody in Berea needs a reminder. The Browns front office exec will presumably put the sweater back in the drawer. People writing about this sort of nonsense are also part of being a media consumer or member in 2026. I go far afield in this Bloviation when there’s little Browns news (like today), but I’m not fired up about a sweatshirt someone likely bought in one of those little shops in an LA airport. It’s irrelevant to me. Whether the Browns can muster an offense is not. THE BACK END OF THE ROSTER: Michael Coats Jr. is back on the practice squad as we posted in the Cooler as it happened. He made the initial 53, got waived due to his injury a few days later, and is now one of sixteen names on the taxi. Bryce Oliver is already there. Coats had an amazing pre-season, and we’ll see him again soon, I’m sure. I have faith in Andrew Berry. I have less faith in the grid. Now that the lights are back on, I can go on fretting about whether the lines are ready. Status normal. Status FUBAR. Have a good one. GO BROWNS! Cello, a six-year-old Parson Russell terrier in Nottinghamshire, followed his nose into a badger warren and spent two days underground. His owner needed a Natural England permit before anyone could dig. Badgers are protected over there. The fine has no ceiling. They got the paper, dropped a camera, sank a shaft two feet down, and pulled him out with sore eyes and a lot of dirt. He slept for 24 hours, then went back to being a dog. Two days in the dark. We can relate. WRAPPING UP When not waiting for the grid to remember we exist, Barry McBride is the Publisher and Founder of the OBR and bloviates this nonsense every morning.
