Palmer is also understood to feature on Wrexham’s list should their move for Patterson fall through. Palmer joined Ipswich from West Bromwich Albion on deadline day in February 2025, signing a three-and-a-half-year contract. That deal runs until the summer of 2028, meaning Ipswich remain in a relatively strong negotiating position should Sunderland firm up their interest. The goalkeeper came through West Brom’s academy after joining the club aged 14 and eventually made 104 senior appearances for the Baggies. Palmer also built considerable EFL experience during loan spells with Kidderminster Harriers, Oldham Athletic, Notts County, Plymouth Argyle and Lincoln City, while he also spent a short period with Luton Town on an emergency loan. His spell with Plymouth was particularly successful, helping the Pilgrims win promotion from League Two, while Palmer later established himself as West Brom’s first-choice goalkeeper. He shared the Championship Golden Glove award in 2023-24 after recording 18 clean sheets. Palmer has subsequently added Premier League experience with Ipswich and was part of the squad which secured promotion back to the top flight last season. Sunderland’s interest comes as Patterson closes in on ending his long association with his boyhood club, potentially leaving the Black Cats assessing their goalkeeping options behind Robin Roefs.
