Brighton and Hove Albion summer signing Michael Svoboda has admitted that he completed a dream with his move to the club this summer. The 27-year-old joined the Seagulls in a €5m deal from Venezia at the beginning of July as a replacement for Jan Paul van Hecke. It’s the next step in a career which has seen him play in his native Austria, before moving to Venezia on a free transfer in 2020. A six-year spell followed in which he made 138 appearances for the Italian side, scoring five and assisting six. He’s excited to get started and complete a childhood dream. “As a child, it was my absolute biggest wish, and now it’s actually become a reality. Of course, this path wasn’t something I could have foreseen,” he told Krone. Impressed by Brighton The defender and his family have been left impressed by what they’ve found at Brighton, particularly their new house by the sea. “I’ve settled in well; the move is complete,” he added. “My wife Ines and I decided on a house with a garden, and we have the sea right on our doorstep – it’s perfect for unwinding.” The hunt for pasta There has been a need for some adaptation, though. After a lifetime in Europe, the biggest change has been learning to drive on the opposite side of the road. And after six years in Venice, he’s still on the hunt for proper pasta. “Driving on the other side of the road for the first time felt very strange, but fun,” he concluded. “When it comes to food, the English can’t compete with Austrian or Italian cuisine. If you want to enjoy good pasta, there aren’t many options.” For now, the focus will be on getting into Brighton’s first team and establishing himself on the pitch. Perhaps then, he can find the perfect pasta place in Brighton to complete his transition fully.
