Lions’ Dan Campbell making eye-opening Jared Goff-Drew Brees comparison

The Detroit Lions are hoping to return to NFL prominence behind new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing and star quarterback Jared Goff, who has yet to win a Super Bowl in his otherwise stellar career. As Goff continues to make his case as one of the NFL's best quarterbacks and a potential future Hall-of-Famer, he also continues to gain attention for his impressive nine-year NFL body of work. According to his head coach Dan Campbell, Goff is on par with one of his former Hall-of-Fame teammates in one key skill: reading defenses. “I mean, he is massively underrated,” Campbell said via SI's Albert Breer. “This is a quarterback that plays the quarterback position — he knows how to play quarterback. When you gotta have it, (he) can stand in the pocket, make an accurate throw, an accurate read, and that's what the quarterback position is. And he's a rare breed of man,” Campbell added. Goff has amassed four straight 4,000-plus-yard passing seasons and three consecutive seasons of 30 or more touchdown passes, throwing for 29 in 2022. This season brings another opportunity for the 2016 first overall pick to showcase his elite passing skills and intellect for the position, which Campbell compared to Drew Brees. “His processing speed reminds me of Brees,” Campbell said. “He sees it, he sees it. And every year it's gotten faster and faster. And then watch him under duress. Nobody makes a more accurate throw under duress than Jared Goff,” the Lions coach added. Goff will have an exciting assortment of targets to throw to this year, including a surging Jameson Williams, a healthy Sam LaPorta at tight end, and a new weapon out of the backfield in Isiah Pacheco, who suffered an injury setback earlier this week.
