Bill Belichick thought he had done enough. Apparently, 39 votes out of 50 was not enough to get him to Canton. Seven months after the former New England Patriots head coach missed the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, the Hall has completely reworked the way its selection process operates. And while the changes were reportedly in the works long before Belichick’s controversial omission, the timing is hard to ignore. Bill Belichick Gets A New Hall Of Fame Voting Landscape The biggest change is simple: there won’t be 50 selectors deciding Belichick’s fate next time around. The Hall is cutting the selection committee down to 28 people, with 25 voting members and three non-voting participants. The 80% threshold remains in place, meaning a candidate will need 20 of those 25 votes to get in. Belichick reportedly received 39 votes last time. One more would have sent him to Canton. Instead, the voting body will be made up of at-large selectors, along with one representative from the Pro Football Writers of America. The Hall says the changes came after a two-and-a-half-year review. President and CEO Jim Porter pointed to concerns about “unintended biases” in the old system, including differences in how candidates were presented and the pressure surrounding players nearing the end of their eligibility. Even that presentation process is changing. Rather than having individual committee members make the case for candidates, one person outside the voting group will present every finalist. Belichick’s 2026 snub had plenty of critics. Patrick Mahomes called it “insane,” while J.J. Watt said there was no scenario in which Belichick shouldn’t be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. There were also questions about whether his controversies played a role. Spygate and Deflategate followed the Patriots throughout his tenure, while some voters reportedly considered his record without Tom Brady. None of that stopped Belichick from building one of the greatest coaching résumés the NFL has seen. He has 333 combined regular-season and playoff wins, 31 postseason victories, and six Super Bowl wins as the Patriots head coach. Now add the two championships he won as the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator, and Belichick owns eight Super Bowl titles overall. The Hall’s new process doesn’t guarantee anything in 2027, however, the voters still have to put his name through, but after coming one vote short the first time, Belichick will walk into a very different room when his name comes up again.
