Malik Willis is walking into a situation where the Miami Dolphins are asking him to prove something he has never really had the chance to prove over a full season. Cam Newton knows what that feels like. The former MVP quarterback has watched Willis since he was 15, long before Willis became the Dolphins biggest bet at the position. Now, Newton believes that there is a recent NFL example that shows exactly what could happen if the Dolphins trust their QB and let him grow into the job. Cam Newton Sees Josh Allen Blueprint For Malik Willis And Miami Dolphins Newton pointed to Josh Allen’s MVP season as a blueprint for what Willis and the Dolphins could accomplish, even without a loaded group of receivers around the quarterback. Allen’s 2025 campaign became the obvious example. The Buffalo Bills QB won MVP despite the Bills not having what many would consider an elite wide receiver room, leaning heavily on his ability to create outside the structure of the offense. Willis has never had anything close to a full season as an NFL starter. He has started just six games in his career, with his early struggles in the Tennessee Titans eventually leading the Titans to trade him to the Green Bay Packers. His time with the Packers changed the conversation. Willis played well when called upon and showed enough development for Miami to hand him a three-year, $45 million contract this offseason. The Dolphins are now betting that the version they saw in the Packers is much closer to who Willis can become than the QB who struggled as a rookie in the Titans. However, the problem is that the Dolphins do not have a roster that makes life easy for their QB. That is where the Allen comparison gets interesting. Newton’s point is less about copying Allen and more about giving Willis enough belief and responsibility to find out what he can actually be. The Dolphins have already committed financially to finding that answer; however, there are still plenty of people around the league who aren’t convinced Willis will be their long-term guy. Fox Sports NFL writer Rob Rang recently projected the Dolphins to land the No. 2 overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft and use it on Oregon quarterback Dante Moore. Rang made it clear he is more optimistic about Willis than the current betting market, but still questioned whether the Dolphins have enough around him to make a major jump. That leaves Willis with a pretty straightforward challenge. If he can turn his flashes into consistent signal-caller play, then the Dolphins may have found their guy.
