The Colorado Buffaloes celebrated a dramatic 14-13 opening win over Georgia Tech, capped by a blocked field goal on the final play. Freshman quarterback Julian Lewis drove the offense 75 yards in the fourth quarter to set up the victory.
But head coach Deion Sanders had a different priority in the locker room after the game. He told players to show respect for their opponents in a very unconventional way before leaving the stadium.
Deion Sanders asks players to clean locker room after win
The Buffaloes won the first game of their 2026 season, with a narrow 14-13 victory against Georgia Tech in Atlanta. It was a dramatic win for Sanders’ team, mounting a late comeback with freshman quarterback Julian Lewis leading a clutch 75-yard drive late in the fourth quarter. The hosts were close to clinching the game, when they were in field goal range. However, defensive star Boo Carter managed to block Aidan Birr’s 45-yard attempt in the last second of the game and sealed the win.
However, it was Sanders who went viral after the game. In a locker room video, the head coach can be seen talking to his players in the locker room after the victory. He told the team to be respectful and to ensure that the locker room is clean before they left the stadium. He said, “Let’s make sure the locker room is clean when we leave. Let’s be respectful, don’t say nothing crazy about our opponents because they fought their butts off.”
He also added that he respected their opponents, “I have a lot of respect for their head coach and their coaching staff. They play really, really well.” Sanders then added a final message, “I love you, I appreciate you, but more than ever, I’m proud of you, and I never gave up on you.” and players in unison responded with, “Yes, sir!”

The whole moment was appreciated by many fans online, who left positive comments for the head coach. However, Sanders did make some comments towards his critics after the game.
Deion Sanders snaps back at critics
After the game, Sanders had some attacks aimed at his critics. He mentioned in the postgame press conference about their rushing game.
“We rushed for 183, my God. They rushed for 51. I thought we were small?” Deion remarked. He later added that the Buffaloes helped to sellout the stadium, “I think this is the first sellout they had in how long?… I think we had a little something to do with that.”
Sanders has been criticized many times in the offseason for many reasons. His 2025 campaign was a poor one, and many thought he will replicate it this season once more. With a win over Georgia Tech, he will now rally the team for the games ahead.
Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes will now look towards the next games.
