Mikel Arteta addressed the work that Arsenal have done in the transfer window.
The Gunners might have strengthened their spine through the additions of Bruno Guimaraes for £75 million from Newcastle United and Ezri Konsa for £51 million from Aston Villa, but supporters of the reigning Premier League champions are not completely satisfied with the evolution of their side.
·‘Look at all the incredible things we have in this squad’
The threat from the attacking unit has been the most blatant department for improvement in this setup.
Gabriel Jesus has gone to Barcelona, but little changes through the middle. Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres will take most minutes as the central forward, and Mikel Merino is the emergency backup.
More interestingly, Gabriel Martinelli has moved for a club record fee of £60 million to Al-Hilal, and Leandro Trossard took the opportunity to sign for Besiktas for £15 million. Neither man might have been a brilliant starter from the left wing, but Christos Tzolis is the only recognised player in the position, and Eberechi Eze is likely to take a key role as a deputy for him and Martin Odegaard.
·Nwaneri loan dents the depth
Eze’s repositioning to the left, where he excelled in the second half at Aston Villa, would make much more sense if Ethan Nwaneri was available as another option to replace the club captain as the number ten.
However, he has gone on a season-long loan to Borussia Dortmund, denting the depth.
Now quantity as well as quality are in doubt upfront in the eyes of fans, and Arteta set up his defence.
“I think we all know we had to make a decision on when we wanted the window to be closed, and now that’s it, and now it’s crystal clear everybody’s squads and where everybody has to be.
“I think every moment, every situation is different. Sometimes we need to react because something unexpected happens as well, and you need to be prepared for that, so I think every case is different.
“I understand the point of view [about too few attackers] as well, but we have to understand as well the amount of minutes that those players played and the ones that were injured last year, especially in the first six months, and the data shows something completely different. But it is what it is.
“The sale of players can come from different aspects as well. It's not always the same one, and that's part of the responsibility that we all have at the football club.
·‘I love my players’
“The window is closed and I prefer to look at all the incredible things that we have in this squad and not to spend any more time on the things that are not part of us now. That's my main responsibility.
“I love my players, that's what I can say. In the bracket, how you want to put them, I don't know. I think at the end of the season we'll put everybody in their place and let's trust them. Let's make sure that we are right behind them and we do everything we can to help the incredible talent they have.
“The focus now for Ethan is to go and play in an incredible club. The atmosphere, setup, with Champions League in front of him, and all the talent at Dortmund. Then we’ll see what happens.”
