Ipswich Town’s interest in Exequiel Palacios is becoming clearer after the initial reports linking the Premier League club with the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder.
Argentine outlet Bolavip has provided further insight into the situation. They report that Ipswich remain in contact over the World Cup winner. However, they have not yet taken formal steps towards a deal with Bayer Leverkusen.
The newly-promoted Premier League side are joined in the race by German side RB Leipzig. Manager Martín Demichelis has reportedly identified Palacios as one of his preferred midfield targets.
It’s good to recall that Palacios featured once for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup. He played the full 90 minutes in the 3-1 group-stage win over Jordan, before not appearing again during the tournament.
Also, his 2025-26 campaign with Bayer Leverkusen was disrupted by injury. A serious right adductor problem ruled him out for much of the first half of the season, limiting him to 25 appearances in all competitions. He registered one assist.
Ipswich still at an early stage
According to the Argentine report, neither Ipswich Town nor RB Leipzig have submitted an official offer to Bayer Leverkusen.
Instead, both clubs have been speaking with Exequiel Palacios’ representatives to establish the player’s situation ahead of the new season and gauge whether a move could become possible during the window.
That suggests Ipswich’s interest is still in its exploratory phase, with club-to-club negotiations yet to begin.
Bolavip also states that Palacios is happy at Bayer Leverkusen after more than six years with the Bundesliga club, but is prepared to assess his future depending on the opportunities presented to him this summer.
He was linked with a move to Chelsea earlier in the window, but nothing really materialised.
Demichelis factor could help Leipzig
One detail added by the Argentine outlet concerns Leipzig’s interest. The report claims Martín Demichelis has personally requested the signing of Exequiel Palacios after taking charge of the Bundesliga side.
That gives Leipzig a clear footballing reason for pursuing the 27-year-old. Of course, it could prove to be an advantage if both clubs eventually decide to test Bayer Leverkusen’s resolve with formal offers.
For Ipswich, looks like there is a path. But the situation surely has not yet advanced beyond initial discussions with the midfielder’s representatives.
