Club chief hits out with 'monumental anger' after Newcastle United transfer U-turn
Newcastle United transfers: Newcastle held talks to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Marseille this past week.
Newcastle United have pushed to bolster their midfield with the signing of former Tottenham Hotspur man Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Marseille.
The 31-year-old emerged as one of several midfield targets following the major departures of Sandro Tonali to Spurs and former captain Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal. Newcastle have signed 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Aladji Bamba as midfield additions this summer transfer window, but are now looking for more experience.
The Magpies were in discussions with Marseille over a potential £15million move for Hojbjerg only for the player to turn down the opportunity to return to the Premier League. Hojbjerg made over 250 Premier League appearances during spells at Southampton and Spurs before joining Marseille in 2024.

He was part of the side that beat Newcastle 2-1 in the Champions League last November.
But with both Marseille and Newcastle keen to strike a deal, Hojbjerg’s stance has reportedly not gone down well back in France.
According to Foot Mercato editor-in-chief Sebastien Denis, Hojbjerg’s refusal to join Newcastle has been met with ‘monumental anger’ by Marseille owner Frank McCourt. The report adds that McCourt wants everyone to ‘take their responsibilities and place the future of OM above individual interests’.
Hojbjerg is understood to be Marseille’s top earner, with wages in excess of £100,000-per-week. He is under contract at Stade Velodrome until June 2028.
