Left-back Josh Doig emerged on the scene at Hibs in 2020 after a loan to Queen’s Park and established himself as one of Scotland’s top prospects. He left Easter Road four years ago and has since played across Serie A and B, sampling two seasons at Hellas Verona before arriving at Sassuolo where his stock continues to grow. He made 30 appearances in Italy's top flight last season and is now on the agenda for a clutch of European clubs. One of those close to home is Sunderland and they have the lure of continental football in the Europa League this season. It’s been claimed that the Black Cats are weighing up their options but they may need to be quick as the likes of Ligue 1’s Marseille are also on the prowl. What former Hibs star could join Sunderland this summer transfer window? A report from the Daily Record states on the ex Hibs ace: “Sunderland are weighing up a move for Scotland left-back Josh Doig. The Premier League club have registered an interest in the 24-year-old who is currently at Italian side Sassuolo. However, they face competition from French giants Marseille and Greek outfit Olympiakos, who are also keen on the former Hibs star. “Marseille tried to sign Doig in 2024 when Sassuolo snapped him up for £5 million. The defender, who made his Scotland debut against Liechtenstein last year, still has two years left on his contract at Sassuolo. But Sunderland, Marseille and Olympiakos are all keeping tabs on Doig who looks set to move on this summer.” It’s been a great weekend back in Leith as Hibs won 2-1 at Rangers in their latest Premiership clash. Next up is their Conference League third round qualifier second leg versus North Macedonian side Shkendija, heading abroad with a 2-1 lead, head coach David Gray saying: "It's a brilliant feeling. You can see the scenes at the end, enjoying it with the fans, and I think that's all part of it. I thought in the first half especially, we were excellent, and we restricted Rangers to very little. “Obviously, we got the goal from the penalty, and from then on we had a couple of chances after that, so maybe we could have gone in 2-0 up. In the second half, you always know there's going to be a reaction from Rangers, and credit to them because they put us under a lot of pressure. To come here and win, you need every single player to put their body on the line - I certainly got that.”
