Curtis Jones was absent from Liverpool’s squad for today’s meeting with Monaco, with the midfielder not even included among the substitutes. Liverpool have reportedly confirmed that Jones’ omission is precautionary, with the midfielder dealing with a hip issue. However, his absence is likely to attract plenty of attention given the continued interest in his future. Jones remains on Inter’s radar Inter Milan continue to regard Jones as a priority midfield target this summer, while other clubs are also believed to be monitoring the Liverpool academy graduate. That makes any absence from a matchday squad particularly interesting. It is important, though, not to read too much into today’s situation. Liverpool have indicated that this is a precaution and there is currently no suggestion that Jones has been left out because a transfer is imminent. A big decision for Iraola Jones’ future is nevertheless an interesting situation for Andoni Iraola. The midfielder has been an important part of Liverpool’s squad and has the technical ability, energy and versatility to play in several midfield roles. But Iraola has inherited a hugely competitive midfield. Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch are competing for important roles, while youngsters such as Trey Nyoni are pushing for opportunities and Liverpool have plenty of other options available. That means Jones will need to convince his new manager that he deserves a prominent role. Liverpool shouldn’t rush a decision From Liverpool’s perspective, there is no obvious reason to rush into a decision over Jones. He is a player who has come through the academy, understands the club and still has plenty of football ahead of him. If Iraola believes Jones can play an important role in his system, keeping him could be the best option. On the other hand, if significant interest arrives and Jones’ opportunities become limited, Liverpool will have a decision to make. For now, however, today’s absence should be treated for what Liverpool say it is — a precautionary measure. The transfer speculation can wait. Liverpool supporters will simply hope that Jones recovers quickly and is back competing for his place in Iraola’s midfield soon.
