Bird 6 Armstrong 17, Thomas Jefferson 14, ppd. at halftime Mechanicsville 28, Goochland 21: The Mustangs are 2-0 for the first time in nine years after Michael Weeden's 25-yard rushing score late in the third quarter lifted visiting Mechanicsville past the Bulldogs (1-1) in a tightly contested, back-and-forth affair. Jackson Myles put Goochland up 7-0 in the second quarter on a 12-yard rushing score, the first of his three TDs on the ground. Myles rushed for 152 yards and three TDs to lead a rugged Bulldogs rushing game that racked up 369 yards. The visitors responded with an 80-yard Cam-Metzger-to-Damarion Wiggins TD connection through the air. Metzger completed 13 of 19 pass attempts for 182 yards and two TDs. Wiggins caught four balls for 141 yards and two scores. Mechanicsville's Blake Whitley caught seven passes for 56 yards and a TD and threw a 45-yard TD to Wiggins on a halfback option gadget play. That came late in the second quarter to put the Mustangs up 14-13 after Myles' second TD carry, this one from 14 yards out. Hayden Stark nailed the Mechanicsville PAT to give the Mustangs a slim lead headed into the locker room. Whitley's 9-yard receiving TD from Metzger preceded Myles' third TD in the third quarter. Caiden Bilak converted Goochland's 2-point try to knot things up at 21-all before Weeden's score and Stark's extra point provided the final margin prior to a scoreless final period. Bilak rushed for 100 yards on 16 carries. Several late defensive stands by the Mustangs sealed the outcome. Mechanicsville's Eli Maxie led that effort, finishing with a game-high 11 tackles, including three critical chase-down tackles to save would-be Bulldogs TDs. Wiggins blocked a late FG attempt. Both teams converted 20 first downs in a very even game. Goochland, deploying a triple-option attack, racked up 369 yards of offense, all on the ground, while Mechanicsville finished with 367 (227 passing, 140 rushing). Twelve Bulldogs penalties netting 105 yards may have been the home team's undoing. No. 8 Petersburg 46, Norcom 0: Javarie Mallory hauled in a pair of TD passes, Geonte Lewis had himself a game on the ground, and the Crimson Wave (2-0) defense was dominant in a resounding road win in Portsmouth. Mallory finished with three catches for 72 yards and two scores. Lewis rushed 10 times for 129 yards and a TD. PBG QB Kemonie Peebles completed 6 of 11 pass attempts for 144 yards and two TDs. Keyon Ridley found the end zone on the ground from 11 yards out. The Crimson Wave defense was strikingly disruptive in the shutout victory — Petersburg had two safeties and a pair of defensive TDs, Rasean Jones Jr.'s 12-yard pick-6 and Treiq Drew's 20-yard fumble return TD. He needed a single quarter to rack up 231 yards and three TDs (on just four carries) in the Royals' high-flying win over the visiting Tigers (0-2). That yardage total set a program record for rushing yards in a quarter. Zayden Roberts accumulated 169 yards rushing and a TD on 15 totes. Cooper Hatten tossed a pair of touchdowns for Prince George (1-1). No. 6 Hermitage 34, Henrico 0: A Brooks brothers connection got the Panthers (2-0) going early on, and Big Herm never looked back in a decisive victory over the visiting Warriors (0-2). Tison Brooks hauled in a 13-yard TD catch from Myles Brooks to kickoff the scoring in the first quarter. Myles Brooks completed 8 of 10 pass attempts for 116 yards and two TDs. Tison Brooks posted two receptions for 30 yards and a score. Jahson Allums (nine carries, 83 yards, TD) and Henry Patterson (eight carries, 92 yards) paced a Panthers backfield that racked up 239 yards on the ground. Jaiden Magbie caught a 20-yard TD from Myles Brooks. Breon Bonner had a 1-yard rushing TD, and Daequan Henley ran a kickoff back 70 yards to the house.
