Chelsea's five untouchable players have been revealed as Chelsea cash in on record fees received to re-invest. The Xabi Alonso era is firmly in place at Stamford Bridge following the closure of the 2026 summer transfer window. After a record number of outgoings and loan fees totalling around £519 million, Alonso’s squad is now closed and ready to take on the 2026/27 season. Following the first-team additions of Valentin Barco, Pep Chavarria, Jordan Henderson, Maxence Lacroix, Emiliano Martinez, Marco Palestra, Geovany Quenda, Danny Welbeck, Emmanuel Emegha and club-record signing Morgan Rogers, it is understood Chelsea wanted to exit the transfer market with a stronger squad, and they believe that objective has been achieved. Along with the new arrivals, The Telegraph have revealed the five key names that remain ‘untouchable’ at Stamford Bridge. Club captain Reece James, who recently signed a new long-term contract with the Blues, is one of the first names on the list. It is understood James is set to further strengthen Chelsea’s midfield this season, despite spending the majority of his career as a full-back. Joining James on the list of ‘untouchables’ are his two England team-mates, Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill. Both Palmer and Colwill have worn the captain’s armband in recent weeks and have moved forward into the senior leadership team. Completing the list are two players who have recently signed long-term contracts to extend their stays in west London. Moises Caicedo committed his future to the Blues during Liam Rosenior’s short tenure. After the pre-season tour of Australia and Asia, Joao Pedro became the next name to commit his future amid interest from Barcelona. Other names that didn’t quite make the list but have been deemed ‘untouchable’ include academy graduate Josh Acheampong. The 20-year-old was the subject of interest from multiple clubs and was touted for a loan move on several occasions. Alonso has trusted the defender on every possible occasion so far, and that confidence is currently being repaid. Chelsea added as many as ten first-team players this summer, bringing a blend of experience and quality to the squad. An important factor is the versatility that many of them bring to the table. One example is Palestra, signed for £47m (inclusive of add-ons), who can play on both the left and right. With plenty of room for improvement, the club have the base of the team set, and if objectives remain on track as expected, the list of ‘untouchables’ is bound to grow. The first test of the ‘new-look’ Chelsea under Alonso takes place on September 6, as the Blues travel across London to take on Arsenal in the Premier League. Just days later, attention will switch to the Carabao Cup as Leeds United head to Stamford Bridge. With no European football, the turnaround between games will be longer than usual, but when a midweek fixture takes place, there’s a strong chance the stakes will be significant.
