The news that The Friedkin Group are looking for new investors at Everton inevitably raised eyebrows this week. Less than two years after buying the club, TFG are working with advisers on a process which the Financial Times reports could result in a significant stake being sold to new investors. Coming immediately after a chaotic end to Everton’s transfer window, it was easy to view the timing with suspicion. But go back to the early months of the Friedkin ownership, and there is another way of looking at it. TFG have already brought new investors in Christopher Sarofim joined Everton’s new ownership structure in April 2025. The American billionaire invested in Roundhouse Capital Holdings, the company through which TFG controls Everton, rather than buying shares directly in the football club. That detail suddenly looks particularly relevant. This week’s search for outside investment is not the first time TFG have opened up the ownership structure behind Everton. Sarofim was already part of it, while former NBA star Jason Kidd subsequently acquired an equity interest. Everton’s current shareholder information shows Roundhouse owns 99.5 per cent of the club, with Dan Friedkin, Sarofim and Kidd all holding equity interests. So perhaps this week’s news isn’t evidence of TFG suddenly looking to reduce their commitment to Everton. Perhaps bringing other investors into the group behind the club was always part of the direction of travel. The timing doesn’t help That doesn’t mean Evertonians shouldn’t ask questions. The Financial Times says the current process could result in new investors acquiring a significant stake, although there is no guarantee a deal will happen. Exactly how large that stake might be, how much Everton would be valued at and what influence a new investor could receive remain unknown. And after a transfer window which left David Moyes short of players in key positions, supporters will understandably want to know whether bringing more wealthy people into the ownership structure will eventually translate into greater spending power on the pitch. But there is an important distinction. The latest attempt to attract additional investment is new. TFG being willing to share the ownership structure behind Everton isn’t. Sarofim’s arrival more than a year ago tells us that. So while the timing of this week’s news was always going to generate suspicion, it doesn’t necessarily point towards a sudden change of strategy at the Hill Dickinson. TFG may simply be taking an existing model considerably further. For updates on the Toffees throughout the season, take a look at our LIVE!
