One of the major stories of training camp for the Jets has been the nickel cornerback position. Last season, multiple players played the role, including Michael Carter II (later traded), Malachi Moore, Isaiah Oliver, and Jarvis Brownlee Jr. Jarvis Brownlee Jr. is one of two players from that crop still with the team in 2026. He was acquired early in the 2025 season in a trade with the Titans and made a nice impact, forcing a turnover against the Broncos in London. Unfortunately, his volatile style of play came with him to New York, as he had some ups and downs. Ultimately, he landed on season-ending IR with a hip injury. Fast-forward to the 2026 NFL Draft – the Jets select Indiana cornerback D’Angelo Ponds. Ponds played on the outside in college, but projects as a slot player due to his size and ability as a tackler. However, he has yet to participate in practice. Meanwhile, Brownlee Jr. has had a good camp and preseason. He’s poised to have the starting nickel role in a revenge game in Week 1. This is a big opportunity for Brownlee, and one that he could run with for a while with a big performance in Week 1. The Jarvis Brownlee Jr. Experience Jarvis Brownlee Jr. is a unique player. For starters, he’s a young player (just turned 25 this summer) who, despite being taken on Day three of his draft, has played himself into starting roles on two different teams in his two-year career. That is an incredible achievement in itself, as many NFL prospects would be happy to be a starter on one team. A big reason why he’s been able to do this is his playstyle. Brownlee is not afraid to get his hands dirty on the field. He’s consistently making tackles despite being a corner. He led the Titans CB’s in tackles in 2024 as an outside corner, and then totaled 31 with the Jets in just 7 games. His willingness to tackle also translates to his coverage, as he’s a very physical corner. Unfortunately, this is where the aforementioned volatility comes into play. Across his two seasons in the NFL, Brownlee has racked up a whopping 20 penalties. His eight with the Jets last year in just seven games were the most by any player on the defense for the entire 2025 season. So, in totality, the Jarvis Brownlee Jr. experience is hard-hitting, fast, physical football, with the downside being the referees may not take too kindly to some of the things he does. What to Expect Week 1 Outside of Jarvis Brownlee Jr., there is a major storyline for Jets vs Titans in Week 1 – Robert Saleh. The former Jets head coach is now the head coach of the Titans, setting up major revenge game potential. There are also a host of former Jets on Robert Saleh’s new squad, including Jermaine Johnson, John Franklin-Myers, and Tony Adams. However, the same can be said for the opposite. The Jets have T’vondre Sweat, a former Titans defensive tackle who swapped with Jermaine Johnson in a trade this offseason. They also have the aforementioned Jarvis Brownlee Jr., who stated this game will be a “blood bath”. Clearly, Jarvis Brownlee Jr. is going to go all out in this game to not only give himself the runway to stay a starter, but to stick it to his old team. Fans can expect his physicality to continue, perhaps with even more intensity in this game. In the same breath, fans can also expect it to impact the Jets negatively with a penalty. Ideally, his impact is similar to that in the Broncos game from 2025. This was his real debut for his new team (he played a handful of snaps against Dallas the previous week), and he made the most of it by forcing the Jets’ first turnover of the year. This is the biggest game he’s played since then, so he will certainly be looking to repeat that success. This time, it will hopefully lead to a win. D’Angelo Ponds was drafted by the Jets in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft. He was highly regarded coming out of Indiana after just winning the National Championship as well as accruing a slew of accolades throughout his college career. He was a lockdown outside corner everywhere he went, which is impressive due to his size (5’9″, 173 lbs.). He drew comparisons to a familiar face to Jets fans – none other than head coach Aaron Glenn himself. The Rose Bowl Defensive MVP has yet to suit up in training camp after suffering a calf injury earlier in the summer. This has presumably thrown a wrench in the Jets’ plans, as Ponds was projected to start in the nickel come Week 1, but could be a scratch at this point. However, this doesn’t mean that he can’t claim that role later in the season. Brownlee is not a lock to be the starter all 17 games given his style of play. Going back to penalties, it’s worth mentioning that Ponds was nearly perfect in terms of penalties during Indiana’s 2025 season, with only one. The Last Word This position is very important to nail down. Going back to Aaron Glenn’s time in New Orleans, the slot position has been relevant on his defense. Notable names include Kenny Vaccaro and C.J. Gardner-Johnson in New Orleans and Brian Branch in Detroit. Now, names like Jarvis Brownlee Jr. and D’Angelo Ponds have a chance to take on that mantle. Both of them have the chops for it. Brownlee, a physical player who’s afraid of nobody, and Ponds is an elite cover man in college who surprises with his own brand of physicality. The former has the advantage of a full training camp, but how long can he hold the throne once Ponds ramps up? This will be a premier storyline to follow as the Jets defense as a whole attempts to right their wrongs, but lacked rights last season.
