'Appreciation and gratitude': Sheffield Sharks fan favourite moves on as they dip toe in Oceania waters
Sheffield Sharks have made a rare move into the Antipodean market for their seventh signing of the summer - while bidding farewell to a fan favourite.
Sean Bairstow, a 25-year-old forward, has joined the Super League Basketball club after spending two seasons playing in New Zealand and his native Australia.
The Brisbaner is the first Australian to sign for the Sharks since Jimmy Mitchell joined the club for one season in 2017. Before him, the last Aussie was Nate Niesler a decade earlier.
Sheffield Hatters have dipped their toe in Oceania waters in recent times with the successful acquisition of Emma Gandini, whose one-year stay in 2024-25 was cut short by injury.
Having spent five years in the US collegiate system, where he averaged 10 points a game and 4.7 rebounds, Bairstow averaged 6.8 points playing for two teams in New Zealand.
Bairstow said: “I’m excited to play in the UK and experience something new. I’ve heard great things about Sheffield and the league so I can’t wait to get started”
Sharks head coach Atiba Lyons added: “Sean has played at a high level since turning professional so will carry great experience that I feel will translate well to the game here in the UK.
“I’m excited to see what he can bring to the roster and the locker room.”
Bairstow joins new recruits Maceo Jack, Dan Gherezger and Adrian Delph on the Sharks’ 2026-27 roster, alongside the re-signed trio of Donovan Clay, Fahro Alihodzic and William Lee - the latter two having played a role in last season’s team.
One player definitely moving on is Prentiss Nixon. The 29-year-old from Illinois was a firm favourite at the Canon Medical Arena in his three seasons at the club, producing some explosive moments and being a lightning rod for the fanbase.
A statement on the club’s Facebook page read: “Everyone involved with the club would like to express our appreciation and gratitude for all the effort and memories during those three years.
"We wish Prentiss luck for the future.
"Once a Shark, always a Shark.”
