The official release of NBA 2K27 has arrived, and after getting an early look at the game over the past week, it’s clear 2K has focused on expanding some of the franchise’s biggest modes while improving the overall look and feel of the game. From the noticeable gameplay updates to MyCAREER’s reimagined storylines and The City’s upgraded environment, NBA 2K27 doesn't completely reinvent the game, but there are meaningful changes that make this year's game feel like a step forward. The Sporting News has you covered with what to expect from this year's release. MORE: Five best new features in NBA 2K27 Gameplay is the real winner NBA 2K In 2K27, the devs went back to basics. Does the game look and feel like real basketball? They answered those questions with several changes to this year's game. Offensively, the changes are immediately noticeable in the dribble packages, with the Expanded Dribble Customization. As someone who lives for trying to cross their opponent with a barrage of moves, I'm a big fan of how 2K27 lets you mix and match individual animations from different NBA players. The addition of moves like the step-through up-and-under to create separation and attack the rim is hyper-realistic, as well as the refined layup options, where players smoothly adjust mid-air for better finishes at the rim. The Upgraded Rhythm Shooting can feel unforgiving initially, especially for casual players, but like most things, it just takes a little bit of time to get used to. The smaller green window on the Shot Meter is tricky at first to find the right tempo, but after a few games I was locked in. When it comes to dunking, 2K26 didn't always adapt to what was happening in the game, i.e. late rotations and mid-air contact, but the difference this year is definitely noticeable. In 2K27, dunk attempts have to be manually timed using the Dunk Meter, but it continuously evaluates position from takeoff through finish, making it a lot more realistic. Defensively, however, I think this is where the game takes its most realistic turn. In 2K27, the upgraded defensive animations make playing defense more realistic. From shot blocking to steals, the collision system rewards timing and makes playing with big men and wing defenders a lot more fun. The overall look and feel of the game is much smoother in 2K27, and visually, while the graphics are not too dissimilar to NBA 2K26, the minor improvements to small details are evident. NBA 2K27 PLAYER RATINGS: Josh Giddey headlines Australian players in new game MyCAREER is the best it's been This is by far my favourite part of NBA 2K27. Starting with the Fire & Concrete storyline, the narrative of being an elite prospect who has their career railroaded by injury, and then working your way back through Rec games and streetball at Rucker Park, before building yourself up from the G League to the pros, is as well-rounded and well-written as it gets. The fact that it's 11 chapters long may be a turnoff for some if you simply want to get your MyPLAYER into the NBA, with the length potentially feeling like a hurdle rather than an enhancement, but for those willing to put in the time, the depth of the story arc ultimately makes the journey worthwhile. Oh, and Vince Staples being your cousin on the ride with you is a hilarious addition. Speaking of improvements, the MyCAREER Eras mode is elite. Being able to drop your player into one of five legendary NBA eras adds another layer to the game, as one of my friends characterised it as "Unc Mode" - but I stand by it. You can pick from the Magic vs. Bird Era (1984), the Jordan Era (1991), the Kobe Era (2003), the LeBron Era (2010), or the Steph Era (2016). It's one thing to be able to play in these eras, but the presentation of Eras is arguably the best part. You really feel like you're playing in that timeline, with era-specific broadcasts and graphics, as well as the old-school filters that really take you back in time. The City is still the ultimate playground Once you drop into The City, the first thing you notice is just how many people are online hooping at the same time. The City is packed! With pretty much every MyPLAYER build you can think of, 2K27 is also the first time that female MyPLAYERS appear in The City in a co-ed space. Male and female builds share the same parameters. Height, weight, wingspan, and ratings come from the build to ensure parity. 2K27 also uses WNBA player animations, so the on-court movements accurately reflect reality. As always, there's plenty to do in The City. The REC now has five new locations: High School Gym, Outdoor Court, Private Gym, Crowded Arena, and a Season-themed venue, and you can post up at Crew HQ with your squad, giving you a dedicated home base in The City. For beginners, the Casual Corner gives you a more relaxed environment to get your reps in for online play. If you aren't spending a ton on VC, Casual Corner lets you improve through 3v3 and 5v5 games, making your climb to the top a little easier. MyTEAM gets some welcome changes MyTEAM didn't get the sweeping changes that some of the other modes received, but there are some welcome improvements to how you build and progress your team. The biggest addition is the new Player XP system, which allows every Player Card to level up through gameplay and unlock rewards as you use them. It makes the progression feel more rewarding as you're encouraged to actually use the cards you're collecting and get the most out of them on the court. The revamped Exchange also gives more value to the cards in your collection, while the Unified Auction House makes it easier to buy and sell cards. MyTEAM feels like more of an evolution rather than a complete overhaul from 2K26, but the changes do improve the experience. 2K NBA 2K27 doesn’t reinvent the franchise, but it makes meaningful improvements where they matter most, and importantly, shows the developers are listening to the feedback of the community. I'll be locked in working on my MYPLAYER build if anyone needs me. Game Review: 9/10 When does NBA 2K27 come out? - Date: September 4 NBA 2K27 releases on Friday, September 4, 2026.
