Derry SFC Round 2B Kilrea 3-14 Faughanvale 1-6 TWO first half goals from Rory Maguire shot Kilrea on their way to a comfortable victory over Faughanvale on Thursday night. Tommy Rogers also weighed in with 1-5 as the Pearses booked their place in Sunday’s Round 3 draw. A depleted Faughanvale are now out of the championship and facing into the relegation playoffs. PJ McAleese opened the Kilrea scoring in the first minute, as they mixed patience with dinked passing, and he slotted over the bar. McAleese and Maguire linked in very well and it was the latter who finished Kilrea’s first goal, with Cathaoir Bradley adding a point. Jude Donnelly’s side were 1-2 to 0-0 ahead before Eoin McElhinney fired over for the Faughanvale. A dangerous diagonal ball from Mark Creeane was flicked over the bar by the onrushing Shane McGlinchey to leave just a goal between the sides. Two Tommy Rogers points opened the gap with Rogers making some fine catches at midfield. It got better for Kilrea after a Conor Gillan free, when Maguire hit the net for a second time. It came from a move through the centre with Gearoid McLauglin’s pass creating the overlap and Maguire finished to the net. McElhinney and Jude Bryson hit points for the ‘Vale, who then won a penalty that was finished to the net by Eoin McElhinney. Kilrea led 2-6 to 1-4 at the break, with McAleese’s point in the first minute of the second half the last score for 12 minutes. A well-worked moved ended up with Rogers finding the net after goalkeeper O’Neill’s blocked the shot, but it went if off the bottom of the crossbar. Rogers and substitute James Kielt added two-pointers, as Kilrea ran out comfortable winners.
