Nicky Hayen makes 'too nice' Burnley admission after season opener
Nicky Hayen demanding more from his Burnley side after unconvincing opener
Nicky Hayen admits his Burnley side played “too nice” during their season opener against Notts County.
The Clarets edged through to the second round of the Carabao Cup on Saturday with a penalty shootout win over their League One opponents.
It followed an unconvincing 90 minutes, in which Hayen’s men lacked punch and creativity during their 1-1 draw - producing just one shot on target during a disappointing first half in particular.
While Burnley were improved in the second half, levelling through Zian Flemming, Hayen admits there’s more to come from his side.
“We want to have creativity in the final third. But not only creativity, we also need deep runs,” he explained.
“It's something that we worked on last week and we still have to improve these kinds of things.
“Sometimes we want to make it too nice. We have the space, play the ball or bring the ball in front of the goal. Now we want to play too nice and then suddenly you lose the ball and you have a transition moment that you sprint 70 metres back.
“So this is something that we have to increase. Let's say play more clinical and not only too fancy, but it will come by the weeks.”

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from Burnley’s display, especially during the first 45, was the parallels to Scott Parker’s style.
Too often the Clarets played the simple pass, opting for a more cautious approach rather than taking a risk with a penetrative forward ball.
On the need to play quicker, Hayen added: “Yes, and also more depth in our game. I think you saw that the intensity in the second half was also higher than the first half.
“Of course you can be dominant, but we have to do things better. They know, and we said also after the game in the dressing room, we have to increase the tempo, but we have the players who can do this.
“But if you make yourself sometimes too comfortable, then even an opponent like Notts County, and again they played a really good game, they can manage it. This is something that we have to play on our level and we don't have to measure their level.”
