Sunderland will face competition from Newcastle United and other clubs in the race to sign Toulouse’s Dayann Methalie this summer. That’s according to La Dépêche, a newspaper local to the Ligue 1 side. They cover fresh updates on Sunderland, Newcastle United and others. The Black Cats haven’t succeeded after making multiple attempts to sign the 20-year-old. Towards the end of last month, the Premier League side were offering around €25m, while the French club requested €30m. On Monday, we relayed news of Toulouse rejecting Sunderland’s fourth bid of €33m and requested around €35m. Sunderland must pay more for signing La Dépêche relays Régis Le Bris’ side offering €33m for the left-back and that would have been Toulouse’s record sale. Their president, Olivier Cloarec, is standing firm and is clear that ‘it’s €40m or nothing’. In other words, Sunderland have to raise their offer by €7m to secure his services. Dayann Methalie graduated from the French club’s academy and made 30 appearances for the first team. There’s no expectation for the youngster to continue at the club, but he will now only leave if his suitors meet the €40m demand. That’s gone up by €5m since yesterday. Why Toulouse are standing firm The French club’s management remain inflexible because there are other clubs keen on signing him. As well as Sunderland, Newcastle United, Bayer Leverkusen and Lille are also in the mix. Although the Magpies are keen, it’s unclear whether they or the other two clubs are ready to make an offer to meet Toulouse’s demand. Until then, Sunderland would be in the lead.
