During his Thursday press conference, the Patriots head coach discussed the challenge created by Seattle’s personnel, physical style and defensive flexibility. The Seahawks can generate pressure without repeatedly committing extra defenders. They also have athletic players throughout the secondary who can disguise coverages and close passing windows quickly. That combination caused major problems for New England in February. Brown and Romeo Doubs to a receiver room that also includes DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism. The Seahawks cannot devote additional attention to Brown without potentially creating opportunities for Doubs, Douglas or New England’s tight ends. That improvement on paper will matter only if Maye has enough time to deliver the football. Seattle’s defensive front recorded six sacks in the Super Bowl and consistently disrupted the Patriots without allowing Maye to become comfortable. New England’s offensive line must handle both the Seahawks’ physical talent and the communication challenges created by the crowd at Lumen Field. Vrabel already acknowledged during the preseason that nothing New England encountered in exhibition games could fully prepare the offense for Seattle’s environment. Brown does not have to produce a massive statistical debut for his arrival to make an impact. If his presence changes Seattle’s coverage structure or creates lighter boxes, New England’s entire offense could benefit. Maye also will have to recognize pressure, protect the football and avoid allowing one negative play to become a stalled possession. Against a defense as talented as Seattle’s, the Patriots cannot repeatedly operate behind the chains. New England spent the offseason building an offense better equipped to handle elite opponents. It will not receive a gradual introduction. The first assignment is the defense that ended the Patriots’ previous season and provided Vrabel’s staff with a clear blueprint of everything that needed to improve.
