'No-brainer' - Hull City sent transfer message regarding Leeds United's Joe Gelhardt by ex-Tigers boss A former Hull City boss has weighed in on talk of another move for Leeds United’s Joe Gelhardt Hull City have been urged to re-sign Joe Gelhardt from Leeds United by former Tigers boss Peter Taylor. Gelhardt has had two productive loan spells at the MKM Stadium, first helping the club avoid relegation from the Championship before playing a key role in their promotion to the Premier League. The 24-year-old delivered a 15-goal haul in the Championship last term, but his exploits have not fired him back into the first-team fold at Leeds United. At the end of last month, Hull owner Acun Ilicali revealed the club were waiting to complete priority deals before deciding on whether to move for the versatile attacker. However, reports have since indicated he has moved up their list of transfer targets. Peter Taylor delivers Joe Gelhardt verdict Peter Taylor, who led Hull between 2002 and 2006, has made it clear where he stands on the possibility of an East Yorkshire return for Gelhardt. He told The 1904 Club podcast: “I think if the manager wants him, then I think the owner should back him 100 per cent because the manager's done an outstanding job. “We all can't believe that, on the strength of when he joined, I don't think anybody was thinking that Hull City were going to be in the Premiership (Premier League), so he's done an absolutely outstanding job, and he should be rewarded. I think he's thinking of that changing room, as well as the squad that he's got available, and as well as everyday training. “You look at Chelsea, they've just signed [Danny] Welbeck and [Jordan] Henderson because they're good professionals, really, really good professionals, so I imagine the manager of Chelsea (Enzo Maresca) wants to get up in the morning and be happy when he drives into Chelsea's training ground, he wants to be happy in what he sees, he don't want to see people that are selfish players or whatever. "If the manager of Hull City knows this player, and wants this player, he's not going to cost a fortune; that to me is where the owner should be backing him, 100 per cent. “If he's 24 and costs £5m, there's a fair chance, even if he wasn't a great success, he'd probably go and get £3m for him anyway, so it's a no-brainer.” Joe Gelhardt’s future Gelhardt has also been linked with Wrexham and Birmingham City, but a move to Hull would hold a strong emotional appeal. Not only is ‘Joffy’ fond of the Tigers, he would be getting another chance to prove himself in the Premier League having previously represented Leeds in the top flight. In May, when asked if he would gladly pen a permanent Tigers deal, Gelhardt responded: "It's a good question, isn't it? Let's see what happens over the summer, but it's pretty clear what I want to do.” Gelhardt has made 64 appearances across two loan spells at Hull, registering 20 goals and six assists.
