Aston Villa's summer shake-up poses Super Cup headache for PSG boss Luis Enrique
The two sides meet in Austria for Uefa’s summer showpiece.
Paris Saint-Germain boss Luiz Enrique admits Villa’s hectic summer is giving him a headache for Wednesday’s European Super Cup.
The two sides meet in Salzburg for the season’s curtain-raiser with Enrique struggling to predict just which team opposing number Unai Emery will select.
Villa’s squad has undergone a shake-up with Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne all departing. The latter could make his debut for PSG in Austria, after completing an £8.5million move to the Champions League winners last weekend.
With Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and Emi Martinez having only returned to training at Villa earlier this week, Enrique doesn’t quite know what to expect.
“We have seen them in the pre-season. There’s a lot of important players that have left, so it is difficult in a pre-season match to assess what team will play tomorrow,” he said.
“It is important for all of the teams to win a European trophy. We will see what match both teams can play tomorrow.
“Everyone thinks that we can win, but we have to show it on the pitch. If you look back in history, it’s difficult to find a team that wins all the time - that’s what we are striving for.”
PSG, who won the Champions League for the second straight year by beating Arsenal on penalties in May’s final, head into the match as clear favourites.
Defender Marquinhos warned Villa they have no intention of taking it lightly.
“Our team won’t be at the peak level, but we have a title that we want to win tomorrow,” he said.
“The trophy is important. Luis Enrique is a coach that does not let us just rest on our laurels because we have won titles before - that is in the past.
“That’s the clear message. We want to keep winning. That is PSG’s mentality, more and more. Aston Villa is a tough opponent, we played them in the Champions League and this is another moment.”
