The San Francisco 49ers headed to Australia a week early for their season opener against the Los Angeles Rams, and they seem to be almost fully healthy. George Kittle and Nick Bosa made the flight after they dealt with injuries they suffered last season, and it looks like they're trending toward playing in Week 1.
There is one player who didn't make the flight, and it's Sam Okuayinonu, who's dealing with a foot injury, according to Matt Maiocco of NBCS.
“DL Sam Okuayinonu will not travel on the team charter tonight to Melbourne, the 49ers announced. He is listed as questionable for the opener against the Rams due to a foot injury,” Maiocco wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Okuayinonu has been key for the 49ers' defense, as he started in 12 games last season and both of the playoff games. He's set to be a backup this season, but he's shown that he can step in and make an impact whenever his name is called.
There is still a chance for Okuayinonu to play, and the hope is that between now and the season opener, he can get healthy enough to travel to Australia.
The 49ers dealt with a lot of injuries last season, but they were still able to finish with a good record and make the playoffs. If they were healthy, there's no telling how far they could've gone, but the hope is that they can at least start this season off strong.
Bosa suffered a torn ACL last season that cost him the remainder of the season, and Kittle suffered a torn Achilles late last season. They worked hard to get to this moment to play in Week 1, and it looks like they'll be returning to the field if everything continues to go right over the next few days.
