Talk of a potential return to Buenos Aires for the Argentinian Grand Prix prompted one reader to recall the time they lapped the six-kilometre layout on roller-skates. Formula 1 used this track configuration until 1981 (below): I don’t think we bothered to time our lap, and it was 45 years ago. I went with a friend on a week day, when we were about 17. There were just three or four cars of random classes, testing, but all activity stopped for lunch. So we saw our chance and just skated right out of the pits. We completed the whole lap without anyone kicking us off – I guess the marshals must have gone to lunch too! Can you think of a better way for a couple of teenager kids to spend time? There was a lot of freedom in the seventies and early eighties, especially in a place like Argentina where the grown-ups had more serious things to worry about.
