Gelsenkirchen, Germany – Edin Džeko, the Bosnian striker for Schalke 04, has announced his retirement from international football with his national team. This brings to an end his career with Bosnia and Herzegovina after nearly 20 years of representing the country. Dzeko explained in a statement published on his X platform account that Bosnia’s match against Sweden, scheduled for October 2, will be his last in his national team’s jersey. The 40-year-old Schalke striker began his international career with the Bosnia national team in 2007. Since then, he has played 151 matches, scoring 73 goals. Dzeko participated with his national team in the 2026 World Cup, before being eliminated from the competition in the round of 32. The Bosnian striker achieved a historic milestone during the tournament, becoming, at 40 years and 106 days old, the oldest player to participate in a knockout stage match in World Cup history. At club level, Dzeko joined Schalke during the last winter transfer window on a contract that runs until the end of the season. He also contributed to the team’s return to the Bundesliga. Dzeko renewed his contract with Schalke during the summer transfer window, to stay with the German club for an additional season.
