Mogridge takes lessons from the gridiron to the court for Iowa volleyball
IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Iowa volleyball is off to a 3-0 start this season, with fifth-year transfer Liv Mogridge contributing to the team’s performance.
Mogridge transferred to Iowa from Georgia Tech. Her background in sports includes time on the football field, where her father coaches the offensive line at Georgia Tech. His coaching career included 14 different moves.
“By the time I moved out when I was 18, we had 18 different houses,” Mogridge said.
Growing up around football
When she wasn’t on the volleyball court, Mogridge spent time on the football field with her father.
“I was a total daddy’s girl. I was with him all the time. I worked camps for him. I just wanted to be around his job. I loved sitting in his meetings. I wanted to understand what he did. I thought it was so cool,” Mogridge said.
Iowa head volleyball coach Jim Barnes said he sees Mogridge as a leader on the court.
“She’s an instant leader and glue coming into the gym. She’s as tough as nails,” Barnes said.
A change in plans
Barnes almost did not land Mogridge in Iowa City. When she entered the transfer portal, she had a different plan.
“Initially I went into the portal to try and go with my sister because she was transferring from Tennessee at the time as well. We had this dream of going to play together. Then God had a different plan. So she ended up at Utah, and I ended up at Iowa,” Mogridge said.
Sounding like her dad
Mogridge said she’s noticed she sometimes sounds like her father.
“I’ll catch myself sometimes sounding like my dad. Just in the way he talks, and the way he cares so much about his players,” Mogridge said.
She said she has to be careful about how much she sounds like him inside the gym.
“We’re inside. You can’t say a lot of things he says inside. You can hear everything in here,” Mogridge said.
