New England Patriots’ Drake Maye and wife Ann Michael Maye star in a new L.L. Bean ad as the outdoor retailer’s newest “teammates,” poking fun at reality TV testimonials and “The Office”-style workplace humor while showcasing the football power couple in the brand’s clothing. The ad, released Wednesday on the company’s social media accounts, has already drawn attention from sports and outdoor apparel fans alike. On Instagram, it had received more than 290,000 views and more than 18,000 likes as of Wednesday afternoon. The campaign is part of a “new multi-year partnership” between L.L. Bean and the Mayes, according to a news release distributed via PR Newswire. At the start of the sitcom-style ad, Drake Maye is seen sitting in a director’s chair in a green flannel and brown pants. He confesses to the camera: “I mean, being a quarterback is nice and all, but you know what I really love? Flannel.” Next, store manager Will Stratton introduces the two “new teammates,” who rise from lawn chairs and hug, congratulating each other. Drake then approaches Stratton with a brown “Maye” jersey, asking, “What do you guys think?” Stratton, in a sitdown interview, says of the jersey, deadpan: “I have no idea where you got that.” In the next shot, Maye responds, smiling, that he brought it from home. The ad continues with playful jabs at workplace humor: A wall of employee-of-the-month plaques all show Drake’s beaming smile. Next, a customer approaches Ann Michael Maye at an embroidery station, asking if she can stitch several Maye football references onto tote bags, including “QB1,” “Number 10,” and, cheekily, “MVP,” to which Ann Michael only smirks and says, “coming soon.” The employees, minus the Mayes, then huddle up to discuss their game plan. “All right, huddle up. We’re a minute from closing. A customer needs size seven slippers. The last pair is in the back,” Stratton says to the group. Another employee chimes in: “It’s a long way for footwear.” His voice echoes dramatically before Drake Maye, backlit and silhouetted, runs out from the back of the store as if he’s running onto the field. Maye arrives at the huddle, a moccasin clasped in one hand. “I’ve got this,” he says, followed by a POV shot of the moccasin spinning through the air like a football. Ann Michael Maye deftly catches it and slips it onto a customer’s foot, giving a thumbs up. The ad ends with the Mayes teasing each other about who will be employee of the month. “I think she’ll be employee of the month,” Drake says. “Nah, I think you’ll be employee of the month,” Ann Michael replies. They go back and forth before Ann Michael scoffs at Drake saying it’ll be “Probably me.” “As Drake and Ann Michael build their life in New England, we’re proud to welcome them to the L.L.Bean family and help them feel at home. Their love of the outdoors and commitment to family make them natural partners for L.L.Bean, and we’re excited for what’s ahead,” L.L.Bean president and CEO Greg Elder said in the release. The release notes that Drake and Ann Michael are originally from North Carolina and are “putting down roots” in New England as Drake enters his third season with the Patriots. The company did not specify how many years the partnership will run. Annie Jonas is a Community writer at Boston.com.
