Boss James Morrison has confirmed Harry Whitwell is part of his first-team plans after the youngster scored his first goal for Albion. The 20-year-old academy product scored the Baggies’ second in Saturday’s 4-1 Carabao Cup win at Rotherham. Whitwell, making just his third senior start for the club, said last month he was open to going out on loan in order to gain more experience this season. But after watching the midfielder grasp his chance in pre-season, Morrison is eager to keep him on board. “He is in my plans,” said the boss. “What I said to the young lads is ‘show me’ and I will be more than happy to put you in. Harry has done that. “He deserved the goal. He has done well in pre-season. There were times again when maybe he was a bit sloppy but overall I thought he was good. He can be happy.” Whitwell, taken off at half-time against Rotherham as a precaution after picking up a knock, is now targeting a first Championship start for the Baggies in Saturday’s league opener at Norwich. Morrison, meanwhile, admitted to some frustration at his team failing to keep a clean sheet in their first competitive match of the season. The Baggies were rarely troubled before Fabio Tavares netted a late consolation for the League Two hosts. Morrison said: “I was very pleased overall but disappointed in the goal at the end, not just for me but the defenders and what we are trying to build on from last season, keeping clean sheets. “I understand it but I will be sat on my sofa tonight feeling angry about that.”
