Some of the newspapers in Italy have given their rating on AC Milan’s summer transfer window, with some mixed scores. It was a summer that started very brightly for Milan, with around €100m spent to secure the additions of Goncalo Ramos from PSG and Mario Gila from Lazio. The likes of Youssouf Fofana and Santiago Gimenez only moved on right at the end of the window, while Fikayo Tomori ended up staying. Only Rafael Leao generated a guaranteed fee too, with the rest being loan formulas. Papers rate the window What did the Italian media think of the mercato that Milan had? MilanNews have relayed the ratings given. Corriere dello Sport (6.5 out of 10): “Attack revolutionised, out with Gimenez, Leao, Nkunku, in with Gonçalo Ramos, Hutchinson, Diego Moreira, the ideas are there now we need to see how the new players will link up. Gila in defence.” La Repubblica (7.5): “Gonçalo Ramos, costing €80 million, is the Rossoneri’s big signing: already a scorer in the league, he promises goals and presence in the penalty area. “The sprinter Gila, arriving from Lazio for €30 million, has already changed Amorim’s defense. The 20-year-old Diawara, Hutchinson, and Diego Moreira, paid €60 million, are all deals with a view to the future, while Camarda returns to base after his experience at Lecce. “As for departures, Nkunku left AC Milan after a season that fell short of expectations, but the most controversial departure was that of Leao after a tense summer: €38 million plus bonuses isn’t a huge amount, though. Especially considering the €180 million spent: the feeling remains that something is still missing, especially in midfield.” Tuttosport (7): Positive marks given for the signings of Ramos, Gila and Moreira to immediately strengthen the starting XI. Calciomercato.com (5.5): “A transfer market in a whirlwind. First without certainties, then with too many (excessively so). The pitch will tell whether Cardinale and Amorim are right, the feeling is that they haven’t done enough to close the gap with those running up front, Inter above all. “The arrivals of Gila and Ramos have solved two chronic problems, but they don’t answer all the questions. While we wait to understand where and how the €45m plus bonus Moreira will be useful (is he really just an alternative to Chukwueze?), we’re lacking a reliable central defender, a first-choice left-back, and a backup for Ramos, because Camarda is currently mostly an unknown quantity at this level. “The left-footed attacking midfielder arrived, but Hutchinson was at the bottom of the priority list: Endrick and Karetsas, who remained summer dreams, were at the top. Even the outgoing players could have been better: Fofana, Ricci, Gimenez, Athekame, and Nkunku left on loan, while an offer lower than €50m was accepted for Leao, which was supposed to be the starting price for buyers. “Rafa wanted to leave, and replacing him won’t be easy: Cissé is talented but not yet ready to become a leader. The squad is short and incomplete, and there are too many matches. AC Milan’s project is risky; staying out of the competition would be a disaster.” Fanpage (7.5): “Few signings, but the level has risen. Putting Gila in defense, Moreira in midfield, and Gonçalo Ramos in attack bolsters a team that already has a solid foundation. “Along with this, players who were blocking the spaces for players like Cissé are released, so players sold or out of the squad like Tomori, Fofana, Nkunku, Gimenez, Fullkrug, and finally Leao, who has become difficult to reintegrate, are welcome. A transfer market with very clear ideas, the first step towards building a strong team.”
