Juventus wanted to add a left-back to their squad in the final hours of the transfer window, despite failing to sell Juan Cabal to Atalanta, and they made a move for Lazio’s Nuno Tavares.
The Portuguese full-back has been one of the best players in that position in Serie A since he moved to Lazio from Arsenal, and Juve have been interested in him for some time. The Bianconeri entered deadline day wanting to sign a new left back because they were confident that Atalanta would complete a deal for Cabal.
Juventus make move for Tavares
Even when it became clear that Atalanta would not be able to complete the move for Cabal, Juve still wanted another full back and turned their attention towards Tavares. The Bianconeri made an approach for the Lazio defender as they looked to strengthen their options in that position.
According to Tuttojuve, Juventus asked Lazio for information about signing the left back, but they could not complete a deal before the transfer window closed. Their interest therefore failed to result in an agreement, leaving the Bianconeri without the new left back they had hoped to add.
Cabal will remain one of the options available to Luciano Spalletti, although that is not what the manager wants. The defender has proven to be a bad choice in his group when he has been given opportunities to play on several occasions.
Cabal remains an option
Despite Juventus’ attempts to find another solution, Spalletti now has no choice but to continue working with Cabal. The manager will have to consider handing the defender another opportunity when required, particularly because the Bianconeri were unable to bring in Tavares before the window closed.
However, Cabal is certainly not considered a starter at the Allianz Stadium. His position within the squad is therefore likely to remain limited unless his performances improve and convince Spalletti that he deserves a more prominent role.
For Juventus, the failure to sign Tavares means they must continue with their existing options at left back. The Bianconeri had hoped to reshape that position before the transfer window closed, but their inability to sell Cabal and complete a move for Tavares has left their plans unchanged.
